No matter what theme your house décor is, there is certain to be a style of furniture to match it. Furniture styles can from the traditional to the modern, so no matter what your tastes there is something for you.
Colonial style furniture was designed originally in the 1700s. It was a combination of William and Mary, Queen Anne, and Chippendale styles, and tended to be more conservative. William and Mary had trumpet legs that ended in a ball or foot, padded or caned chair seats, and Oriental lacquer-work. Queen Anne had cabriole legs ending in a pad or drake foot, fiddle-backed chairs, and bat wing shaped drawer pulls. Chippendale had similar features, and also had a broken pediment scroll top on tall case pieces. Your colonial style living room furniture could include some or all of these elements. Federal style furniture is rather similar. It has graceful straight lines, light construction, tapered legs, inlay, and contrasting veneers. Black walnut, cherry, fruitwood, maple, rosewood, and satinwood were popular woods. |

Asian style furniture is quite popular with those who want a serene living space. Asian pieces are both beautiful and functional, with a soothing simplicity about them. The lines are organic and smooth, but not oversized, and delicate fans, lanterns, and birds add decoration.
Western Style furniture tends to be heavy and simplistic, and gives a feeling of the Old West about it. Southwest style sectionals for your living room furniture might feature carved stars, cutout stars, carved longhorns, carved horses, or be made from cow horn or cowhide as decoration. Tropical style furniture is quite popular. It is a casual style with comfortable, large-scale furniture and neutral tones. Motifs include tropical jungle look and animal designs, and feature animal hides and large plants. Grass cloth, rattan, wicker, and bamboo are often used to add texture to the room. Country style furniture is simple and homey feeling. Country French style furniture features many natural colors and materials. Craftsman style furniture, also known as mission style, is popular with its simple lines and geometric shapes. Tuscan style furniture, Spanish style furniture, and Mediterranean style furniture can be in a similar, simple taste, or it can lead towards the more ornate with decorative filigree on the pieces. Arts and crafts style furniture is simple, and focuses on the movement of the wood itself with minimal modern influences. Focus is put on the grain and color of the wood, dove tail joints, and natural colors. |
